Who am I

profile.jpg

My name is Nataša (Natasha). My family and I live in Laakdal, Belgium, where we moved from a small country Slovenia a few years ago.

Since I was little I wanted to become a school teacher, and not just any teacher – a teacher of Mathematics! Mathematics – really? Why? I liked numbers, order, accuracy, I liked the process of solving a tough problem, and the enthusiasm and pride which came afterwards. There is no better feeling than when you’re working hard to understand the problem and try to solve it, and then it suddenly clicks and everything falls into place. But why a teacher? I always kind of liked being in control, delegating tasks, and more importantly – I liked explaining and clarifying things. From explaining to the kindergarten teachers why I should not go to sleep after lunch (which proved to be successful :)) and helping and tutoring my classmates to understand mathematical concepts, all the way to demonstrate the project vision to the stakeholders to get funds, show and tell about my research to a wider audience in person or in the written form, leading workshops and team buildings, giving lectures, organize events, and managing various teams.

I’m the happiest person when I see others thrive, grow, become better, knowing I was a part of their journey and the one who helped them get there.

Education

University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Education, Slovenia
Programme: Mathematics and Computer Science
Teacher of Mathematics and Computer Science (MSc)

I did finish the Faculty of Education and proudly became a Teacher of Mathematics and Computer Science just like I envisioned. However, life sometimes leads you in different directions. For me, it was just after graduation, when there were no available permanent positions for a teacher. Unexpectedly, I found out about the Computer Science competition held by the Faculty of Computer and Information Science, which was just starting out and volunteered to help with the organization. And I loved it! It was awesome, everything from a fast-paced environment, discussions and making arrangements with different profiles of people to quick thinking, solution-oriented mind and time- and budget-sensitive milestones. But most importantly, I did a great job, because they offered me a full-time position in the following days.

My career grew there from organizing and PR to project managing and research, constantly adding more challenging projects. At the same time, I got an opportunity to apply the new and innovative ideas that I researched into practice, became a part-time teacher of Computer Science and even co-written a Computer Science textbook for high school.

My skills were challenged even further in the 3D software company in Belgium, where state-of-the-art software is being developed. Customization, personalization and digital automation were brought to a completely new level, and I got an opportunity of implementing them across various industries, from automotive to medical.

Skills

In 2015 my husband accepted a job in Belgium, so we just waited a few months until I gave birth to our first child and together we moved to Belgium. I continued working remotely for the next two years up to the end of all the ongoing projects. After that, I decided on longer maternity leave with our second child, took time to learn a little bit of Dutch, and attain new skills.
